The Hardest Weeks of Aspen's Airport Closure Come First

The Aspen/Pitkin County Airport closes at 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 2027, and reopens at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, 2027. The added flights at Eagle are written as a peak-summer schedule, and the ski season is still running when the runway goes dark. So the stretch that needs the most planning is spring, before the summer replacement network is in place.

April 4 Falls in the Middle of Closing Weeks

The ski calendar and the airport calendar were set separately. Side by side, they look like this:

  • April 4, 2027: Buttermilk's scheduled last day. ASE closes at 11 p.m. that night.
  • April 11: Aspen Highlands and Snowmass are scheduled to close.
  • April 18: Aspen Mountain is scheduled to close.

Aspen Snowmass lists those closing dates "as conditions allow." If the snow holds, the last two weeks of the Aspen Mountain season run with no commercial or private flights into the valley's own airport. The closure covers all commercial and general aviation operations. The airport has also said there will be no on-site parking while it is closed.

This matters most for April plans: a family visit timed to closing weekend, guests flying in for one last week on Ajax, or a homeowner leaving the valley right after the season ends. Any of those trips now starts or ends somewhere other than Sardy Field.

Why the Runway Cannot Stay Open in Pieces

The closure is long because the work is a full rebuild. According to the airport's runway reconstruction FAQ, the runway is moving about 80 feet west, widening from 100 to 150 feet and getting new grades. Every navigational aid will be replaced or moved. The airport says the existing runway has reached the end of its useful life, and that the current layout misses the FAA's required 400-foot separation between runway and taxiway centerlines. It also says the old runway "cannot be kept open during this type of construction." The wingspan limit, now 95 feet, rises to as much as 118 feet once the work is done. The project has more than $37 million in Federal Aviation Administration funding.

Some of the prep work is already visible from the road. Enabling work includes realigning part of Owl Creek Road and the Owl Creek Trail, relocating a water line, extending the Owl Creek culvert, and building a temporary haul route and batch plant area for next year's paving. That work is scheduled to continue through October 2026. Construction on the new passenger terminal and Fixed Base Operator facility is also set to begin in April 2027.

Eagle Gets the Flights, Built for Summer

The airport names four commercial alternatives: Denver International, Grand Junction Regional, Montrose Regional and Vail/Eagle County Regional. Rifle Garfield County Airport is available for general aviation. Eagle is where the airlines have added the most capacity. The Aspen Times reported in August that Eagle's peak-summer schedule will grow from 46 weekly flights in summer 2026 to 112 in summer 2027, which is 66 more flights a week.

Airline at Eagle (EGE) Weekly flights before Weekly flights, 2027 What changes
United 25 63 Denver goes from three to six daily; Houston and Chicago O'Hare go from weekend-only to daily; daily Los Angeles added
American 21 49 Dallas–Fort Worth goes from three to four daily; twice-daily Los Angeles and once-daily Chicago O'Hare, for the peak summer season starting May 27, 2027

American's expansion is described as a peak-summer schedule starting that day, and the 112-flight total is a peak-summer figure. The published plans focus on summer, so it is unclear how much of the new Eagle service will be flying between April 4 and late May. That is about seven weeks, and it includes the end of ski season. The Aspen Times reported in August that the expanded schedules were open for sale up to 11 months out. April travelers can check exact dates directly with the carriers now, without waiting for a summary.

Delta is the third major airline at Aspen. Airport Director Diane Jackson told county commissioners this month that Delta has not yet announced additional service at Eagle. Delta loyalists have Denver, Grand Junction and Montrose, which are all longer drives.

The Shuttle That Could Start Before the Airport Closes

Getting from those airports to the upper valley is what local agencies are trying to solve. Pitkin and Eagle counties formed a Community Continuity Planning Group with community stakeholders. The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority and Aspen One lead its transportation subcommittee, and the Aspen Chamber Resort Association leads marketing. RFTA has started a request for qualifications for shuttle service from both Eagle and Denver. In an Aspen Times report from the Oct. 7 county commissioners meeting, County Manager Kara Silbernagel explained why public money is involved:

"If there was a free-market solution, a private solution, it would already be happening."

The working numbers are a fare of about $50, meant to keep a wave of rental cars off Highway 82, and a projected subsidy of $600,000. Half would come from the Elected Official Transportation Committee and half from other partners. ACRA, RFTA and Aspen One have each tentatively offered to contribute. The same presentation said Eagle shuttle service could start as early as this ski season. All of this is still a proposal. No operator, timetable or final fare has been announced. Officials are also looking at Brush Creek Park and Ride for temporary rental-car parking and last-mile transfers.

If the shuttle does launch this winter, residents would get several months to try the Eagle route before it becomes the closest commercial option.

Most of the Summer Calendar Holds

Once the Eagle schedules are running, summer looks steadier than the closure's reputation suggests. ACRA told Aspen City Council in September that all events were going ahead as scheduled except one. Two-thirds of surveyed visitors said the closure would not affect whether they visit, and 18.6% said they were more likely to come because they expect fewer crowds. The exception is the Aspen Security Forum. Aspen Public Radio reported it will not return to Aspen in 2027. ACRA's Eliza Voss called it the only major recurring special event not scheduled to return, and said the Food & Wine Classic stays in Aspen.

Local businesses are more cautious. In ACRA's business research, reported by the Aspen Times in May, 82 of 165 businesses and employers surveyed expected a significant drop in visitor traffic. Ten expected to close for the whole closure period, and 14 expected partial closures. Expect a fairly normal event calendar next summer, with some favorite spots keeping shorter hours or closing for part of it. It makes sense to check before booking a standing reservation or planning a guest's week around one place.

Nov. 19 Reopens the Runway, Not the New Terminal

The reopening is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, 2027. Flights will use the existing terminal until the new one is finished, which is projected for 2029. The airport calls the schedule weather-dependent and subject to change. A permanent ground transportation center planned for the new airport could be pushed to a later phase. The Aspen Times reported that no decision was made at a September meeting, and commissioners pressed to keep it a priority.

The airport's construction updates page is the official source for date changes. The dates to plan around are the 11 p.m. April 4 shutdown, the possible two remaining weeks of Aspen Mountain skiing after it, and May 27, when American's added summer service at Eagle starts.
